Observing in Christmas night

It had been miserably cloudy in Finland during December (at least in Sodankylä). There just haven’t been any opportunities for observing. But then I travelled to my home in Ulvila to spend Christmas there, and finally I also had a chance to see stars and make some observations. I went to the observatory of Porin Karhunvartijat in Ulvila for observing. The sky had been clear in early evening, but I had a bad luck with the clouds, because they started to interreupt my observing just when I arrived in the observatory. Nevertheless, I could make at least one observation, I observed Z Uma in long time, and it’s brightness was around 8 mag. Then I also looked at Jupiter, but I didn’t make any observation of it, because I was already feeling very tired.

Then I also did the usual observations of observing conditions. Now I was finally able to make SQM -measurements also in Ulvila, I did the observations in the observatory (which is situated in suburban area called Krapisto in the eastern edge of Ulvila town), there I got SQM -measurements of ~20.6. NELM was around 5.7.

Then I repeated the same measurements in rural area of Friitala (about 2 km southwest of Ulvila town), where my home is situated. There I got roughly similar measurements. Anyway, it is still too early to make any in-depth conclusions, but now it seems that there is not any big difference between the conditions in Friitala and Krapisto. Of course I should make more measurements, which I will surely do when I’m able to!

Observing session: #25/11-12
Date: 24/25.12.2011
Time: 21.35-00.00
Place: Ulvila observatory, Finland
Instruments used: L90 mm
Objects observed: Z Uma
Conditions: NELM: 5.7, SQM: 20.61, 0 °C, partly cloudy, calm, no aurorae, no Moon, no snow on the ground

Merry Christmas to you all!

Thank you for your comment! It’s sad to hear that weather hasn’t been favourable to you there in Wales, but hopefully the new year will give lots of clear nights with plenty of observing opportunities!

Clear skies and succesfull new year to you!
