Observing sites

My observing sites in Finland.

My primary observing sites:

Stormälö, Parainen (60N 22E)
Bortle class: 4
Best SQM: 21,36
Best NELM: 6,6
Description: An island in the archipelago of Turku, region of Varsinais-Suomi, municipality of Parainen, about 20 km SSE from Turku city. The site is a large sand pit, with open horizon to every direction. No light pollution, only the lights of  Turku and Parainen are glowing in the northern-north eastern sectors of sky. Accessible also in winter!

Ulvila observatory (61N 22E)

Best NELM: 6,0
Description: An amateur observatory of astronomical association Porin Karhunvartijat, on top of the Ulvila water tower in the height of ~25 meters in Ulvila, Satakunta region, about 9 km SW from Pori city. Good facilities for observing!  The water tower/observatory is situated on the eastern edge of Ulvila town in region of Satakunta. Lights of Pori are shining in the northern sector of sky, lights of Ulvila in the east and lights of Nakkila and Harjavalta towns further in the south, eastern sector of sky and zenith are pretty dark. Accessible all year round.

Friitala, Ulvila (61N 22E)

Description: A rural area two of kilometres SW of Ulvila town in Satakunta Region, about 8 km SSE from Pori city. Light pollution domes of Pori and Ulvila are ruining the northern/eastern sector of sky. Other directions pretty much free of light pollution. Because of the vicinity of towns Pori and Ulvila, the sky never gets really dark, not even in autumn. Accessible also in winter!

Leistilänjärvi, Nakkila (61N 22E)
Bortle class: 5
Best SQM: 20,80
Best NELM: 6,2
Description: A very large, open agricultural field area, located About 15 km SW from Pori city, in Satakunta region. There is open horizon to all directions, light pollution domes in many directions, especially light pollution dome of Pori in NW is very prominent. Accessible all year round when there is not too much snow on the ground.

Saarijärvi, Lavia (61N 22E)

Best NELM: 6,6
Description: A small gravel quarry in Lavia, easternmost part of Pori municipality, in Eastern Satakunta region, about 30 km ENE from Pori city. No direct light pollution sources nearby, relatively open horizon to all directions! Accessible all year round, when there is not too much snow on the ground.

Koski, Kullaa (61N 22E)
Bortle class: 4
Best SQM: 21,10
Best NELM: 6,6
Description: A small gravel quarry in Kullaa, easternmost part of Ulvila minicipality, in central Satakunta region, about 24 km E from Pori city. No direct light pollution sources nearby, relatively open horizon to all directions! Accessible all year round, when there is not too much snow on the ground.

Tähtikallio observatory (61N 26E)
Bortle class: 3
Best SQM: 21,32
Best NELM: 6,6
Description: The countryside observatory center of astronomical association Ursa, close to rural locality of Artjärvi in municipality of Orimattila, Päijät-Häme -region, about 45 km SE from Lahti city and 28 SW km from Kouvola city. Dark place with three observatories and good facilities for staying over night. A little bit restricted horizon, accessible also in winter.

Aska, Puolanka (65N 28E)
Bortle class: 3
Best SQM: 21,37
Best NELM: 6,6
Description: A rural village in municipality of Puolanka, Kainuu region, 20 km N from Puolanka town, 105 km E from Oulu city. A considerably dark place, especially in autumn before snow covers the ground. There’s a B&B place near by for accomodation. Accessible also in winter!

Kersilö, Sodankylä (67N 27E)
Bortle class: 3
Best SQM: 21,38
Best NELM: 6,9
Description:  A gravel pit/quarry close to a rural village of Kersilö in the municipality of Sodankylä, Lapland Region, 17 km NNE from Sodankylä town, 120 km NNE from Rovaniemi city. Really dark place, especially in autumn just before snowfall and if the sky happens to be free of northern lights. Really open horizon to all directions! This place is accesible also in winter!

Kovero heritage farm, Seitseminen National Park (62N 23E)
Bortle class: 3
Best SQM: 21,12 (only one measurement, snow on the ground)
Best NELM: 6,6
Description: Kovero heritage farm is located in the SW corner of the Seitseminen National Park, located in Kuru, municipality of Ylöjärvi, Pirkanmaa region, about 60 km NNW from Tampere city. Very good site for deep sky observing, there are no artificial lights nearby, and the place is also accessible in wintertime! Good dark sky site!

Visitor Centre, Seitseminen National Park (62N 23E)
Bortle class: 3
Best SQM: 21,35
Best NELM: 6,6
Description: The site of The Visitor Center of the Seitseminen National Park, located in Kuru, municipality of Ylöjärvi, Pirkanmaa region, about 60 km NNW from Tampere city. Lights in the yard of the place are shining in the evening, but when they have been switched off, the place is really dark and suitable for observing! The only restriction of this site are the tall trees that are blocking the view towards horizon. Accessible also in winter!

Länsi-Aure, Kuru (62N 23E)
Bortle class: 3
Best SQM: 21,23
Best NELM: 6,6
Description: A rural village located in Kuru, municipality of Ylöjärvi, Pirkanmaa region, about 60 km NNW from Tampere city. The site is an open bog, there is a road going through the area and there is a good spot with solid gravel base which makes it a good place for observing, nevertheless the place is on otherwise wet peat bogs. Open horizon to every direction and no light pollution anywhere! Occasionally accessible also in winter.

Torinkylä, Sotkamo (64N 28E)
Bortle class: 3
Best SQM: 21,45
Best NELM: 6,8
Description: A rural village in municipality of Sotkamo, Kainuu region, 9 km NW from Sotkamo town, 30 km E from Kajaani city, 165 km SE from Oulu city. Really dark place, no light pollution. Not accessible in winter.
